Maine's Reform Maine's widely-touted 2003 health reform plan has expanded the number of people with coverage by only 11,000, less than 10 percent of the 136,000 uninsured in Maine in 2002. Like many mandating + state subsidizing plans there is no cost controls, so 83% of businesses which don't insure their workers cite high monthly costs as the reason they do not participate in Dirigo Choice. (Lipson et al, Mathematica, Commonwealth Fund, 12/05/07)

SOME HEALTH CARE LOBBYING EXPENSES
Sorry, this data did not include the health insurers who likely widely outspent even the Pharmaceutical industry on lobbying. Expenditure in millions of dollars are shown below. Pharmaceuticals would actually sell more of their product if everyone in the nation had adequate health coverage. They fear, however, that at least with single payer they would face more regulation and negotiation of pricing (like currently handled by the VA and the military in their expenditures).

to 90% among Liberals. By contrast, Enterprisers strongly oppose guaranteed

increase:
65% of the total, 23% of enterprisers, 59% of social conservatives, 63% of pro-government conservatives,
55% of upbeats, 64% of disaffecteds, 73% of conservative Democrats, 65% of disadvantaged Democrats, 90% of liberals
